How to Strip Your Cloth Diapers

Diapers should be stripped regularly, to prevent and treat build-up problems, and to keep them working like new. There are several ways to strip your diapers:

With hot water:

  1. Wash the diapers as you normally would.

  2. When they are clean (no need to wait for them to dry), wash on hot with no detergent.

  3. Check to see if there are any bubbles.

  4. Repeat rinsing until you no longer see any detergent.

With dishwashing liquid (for pocket diapers):

  1. Wash the diapers as you normally would.

  2. When they are clean, wash the diapers with dishwashing liquid (like regular Axion).

  3. If there is a lot of build-up, you may wish to use a small brush and scrub the entire fleece layer inside and out.

  4. Rinse, rinse, and rinse!

Tips:

  • You may wish to sprinkle ½ cup of baking soda to your wash when stripping, to neutralize and eliminate odors. Then add ½ cup of white vinegar (not recommended with hard water) to your final rinse to restore the pH, dissolve detergent residue and to soften the fabric of your cloth diapers. (They won’t smell like vinegar when they’re dry.)

  • You can also boil your diapers (prefolds, hemp and microfiber inserts only -- not recommended for covers, pockets and AIOs, and for those with snaps) in a large pot of water for 15 minutes. Use a tong to move the diapers around to ensure every part gets submerged in the water.

  • If you have tried the above methods and your diapers still smell, it is possible you are not using enough detergent.

  • Always follow the manufacturers’ instructions!  The Eco Baby Boutique cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur while following the above instructions.
